“As Konstantinos Cavafy wrote: ‘Ithaka gave you the beautiful voyage; without her you would not have set out on the way. She has nothing more to give you.’ Il giorno ha una notte piena di stelle is the testimony of a similar journey: a journey back home, an encounter that carries with it a sense of rediscovery.”
G. Mulas, November 2025
The exhibition Il giorno ha una notte piena di stelle is Giuseppe Mulas’s first solo exhibition in Sardinia, his native land. It marks a significant moment in the artist’s development and professional career and represents the outcome of a long and profound maturation of his painting practice, shaped by national and international experiences that have redefined his stylistic choices and consolidated a practice which, like a spiritual quest, offers access to his sensibility through the medium of painting.
Painting, an urgency and an obsession, is, for Mulas, the primary analytical tool through which to explore his personal experience and the emotional fabric of human existence. Trained at the Accademia Albertina in Turin and deeply knowledgeable in painting techniques, he focuses his practice on symbols and spaces, archetypes and places, rendered through emotional awareness and a carefully developed expressiveness. His compositions often emerge from painting from life, in which concrete objects intertwine with symbolic memories through a process of narrative deconstruction and recomposition.
The exhibition presents a new cycle of paintings in both large and small formats. The exhibition opens with the large painting Dentro casa 01, part of the ongoing series of the same name, currently being developed in the artist’s Turin studio. The series is characterised by theatrical architectures that define the setting for possible narratives, blending memory and dream. The urgency that drives the artist appears to be guided by the same impulses that characterised his early years at the Accademia Albertina: the unavoidable need to question the surrounding world and his emotional connection to domestic spaces. Like a story taking shape in the silence of the night, Mulas’s dense and layered painting explores the dream as an interior space, moving through the domestic environment and its fragile emotional dimension. When looking at the Dentro casa series, the movement between visual proximity and distance is fundamental, encouraging the discovery of detail and painterly gesture, revealing the many emotional nuances that inhabit the canvases and modulate their intensity.
The theme of human absence and domestic space lies at the heart of the exhibition. A brocade armchair in Seduta assenza, unmade beds and rolled-up blankets, crumpled sheets and pillows yet to be fluffed in Nudi and Insonne occupy the scene, becoming protagonists of the narrative. They are traces that testify to and anticipate the presence and absence of bodies, clues to a human figure that has inhabited — or will return to inhabit — these spaces, suggesting an intimate and concealed form of storytelling. Time is the silent co-protagonist of the scene: everyday life and domestic objects emerge, imperfect, as signs of a shared experience and as an expression of the artist’s personal experience. And, as in a snapshot, the chosen framing invites the viewer to imagine the artist’s sensibility through a strong sense of immediacy. The recurring deep sky, scattered with stars, marks the boundary between reality and imagination, illuminating a cyclical desire for escape and return, for a renewed sense of belonging and for the melancholic loss of the self. It is with this awareness that Mulas’s painting becomes an explicit tool for reworking his own experience and accompanies a reflection on identity, sexuality and self-determination in a place distant from his emotional world.
Il giorno ha una notte piena di stelle is also a statement of a profound consistency within the artist’s practice, expressed through an artistic and conceptual awareness rooted in the continuous rediscovery of domestic environments as spaces for sensory exploration and for the recovery and representation of archetypes from the world of childhood. The exhibition marks the beginning of a phase of artistic and personal maturation and experimentation for Mulas, reflecting the daily process of observation and analysis carried out through his painting practice. For the artist, painterly gesture and artistic production are tools for acceptance and understanding. Like meditative practices that allow us to remain present to ourselves as life unfolds, each work becomes a precious testimony to existence and offers ways of reading and investigating emotions—an ensemble of processes made possible only by being alive.
Giuseppe Mulas (Alghero, 1995) lives and works in Turin. His artistic practice draws on the observation of everyday life to develop a painterly and sculptural research in which memory, symbolism and autobiographical experience are translated into works characterised by strong chromatic intensity and a figurative language suspended between reality and imagination.
His most recent solo exhibitions include Breathe, L.U.P.O. (Milan, 2024); S’avreschida de su sambene, Sas istellas de su coro, Galleria Mimmo Scognamiglio (Milan, 2023); ALL THE STARS OF YOUR NIGHT, Galleria In Arco (Turin, 2022); and Sleep Well Childhood, Galleria Alberto Peola (Turin, 2020).
In 2026, Mulas’s work was included in the group exhibition Rêverie, Simondi Art Gallery, Turin. In 2023, he participated in the group exhibition Sensing Painting, Castello di Rivoli, Turin. His work has also been included in Tra pennelli e immagini virtuali.
